Prof. Dr. Thomas Schaller studierte Wirtschaftsinformatik mit den Schwerpunkten Systementwicklung, Büroautomation und betriebliche Fertigungssysteme an der Universität Bamberg, wo er auch seine Promotion im Bereich Workflow-Management-Systeme ablegte.

Nach seiner Zeit in der Praxis bei der Bertelsmann AG und der Loewe AG wurde er im Jahr 2002 für das Lehrgebiet "Computerunterstützte Geschäftsprozesse" an die Hochschule Hof berufen. Er leitet seit dieser Zeit den Studiengang "Verwaltungsinformatik", der gemeinsam mit der Fachhochschule für öffentliche Verwaltung und Rechtspflege in Hof durchgeführt wird. Sein Forschungsgebiet umfasst generell die Automatisierung von Geschäftsprozessen in Wirtschaft und Verwaltung.
